HANNIBAL, Mo. — Hannibal Parks and Recreation and the YMCA of Hannibal are collaborating this year to form a summer swim team and sponsor a league that will last eight weeks from June 2 – July 28.

Marie Allen, the swim coach for the Hannibal YMCA, said this a new, fun and laid-back introduction to competitive swim.

Practices for the swim team will be 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Ronny Ferrel Hannibal Aquatic Center. There will also be several swim meets but those will typically be in the evening at the Hannibal YMCA.

Tryouts and evaluations will be at 6:30 p.m. on May 12, 15 and 20 at the Hannibal YMCA. Allen asks that each participant bring a swimsuit, goggles and a towel. There is a one-time fee of $150 to join the team.

Emily Hultgren, aquatics director for Hannibal Parks and Recreation, said she hopes the swim team builds confidence and makes youngsters safer at the pool. “Swimming is a lifelong skill that can be enjoyed throughout your life. From recreation to competition, the ability to swim opens up opportunities for many activities,” Hultgren said.
