WIU’s McCowan captures OVC Player of the Week, Freshman of the Week honors

MACOMB, Ill. — Not a week goes by without Western Illinois University freshman Raegan McCowan earning an Ohio Valley Conference women’s basketball honor.

This week, she earned two.

Coming off a scintillating scoring effort in an overtime loss to Southern Indiana last Saturday, McCowan was named both the OVC Player of the Week and the Freshman of the Week. It is her fourth Player of the Week honor this season and her 12th Freshman of the Week accolade.

McCowan’s week began with an 18-point effort in an 87-85 double-overtime loss to Morehead State. She also had six rebounds before fouling out.

Her signature effort of the season came against Southern Indiana. She set the Western Hall women’s basketball single-game scoring record with 45 points, going 13 of 27 from the field, 2 of 3 from 3-point range and 17 of 18 from the free-throw line. She added eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and one blocked shot as WIU fell 96-89 in overtime.

Overall this season, the 5-foot-11 McCowan is averaging 19.3 points while shooting 46 percent from the field and 78.1 percent from the line. She also is averaging 8.1 rebounds. She leads the OVC in scoring and ranks fourth in rebounding.
