MACOMB, Ill. — Trenton Massner’s history-making efforts as a senior on the Western Illinois University men’s basketball team were noticed far beyond the Summit League borders.

Coaches with the Miami Heat liked what they saw.

Massner, the 6-foot-2 shooting guard from Wapello, Iowa, inked a free-agent deal with the Heat after going undrafted in last week’s NBA Draft and will play for Miami in the NBA Summer League. Held in Las Vegas, the summer league runs July 7-17.

Training camps for NBA teams begin in late September.

“We’re excited for Trent,” WIU coach Chad Boudreau said. “It’s a tremendous opportunity, he’s extremely talented and worked hard to get to this point.”

Last January, Massner set the WIU single-game scoring record when he netted 46 points in a 92-80 victory over North Dakota at Western Hall. Three days later, he hit the game-winning shot in a 75-72 overtime victory over South Dakota State, finishing with 23 points, six assists and six rebounds.

Massner received both the Lou Henson National Player of the Week Award and Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week Award, becoming the first-ever Leatherneck to do so.

Overall, Massner averaged 19 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game. He was second in the Summit League in scoring and first in assists. He shot 43.9 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from three.

He was a first-team All-Summit League selection who scored 1,075 in his two-year WIU career after transferring from Northwestern State. He also had 284 career assists and 349 career rebounds.
