QUINCY — First-year Quincy University women’s soccer coach Mackenzie Schissel knows the difference between starting the season with a scoreless draw and a two-goal loss and being undefeated comes down to one thing.

The Hawks need to be more bulldogged.

Quincy trailed Saginaw Valley State 1-0 at halftime Sunday at Legends Stadium before allowing a goal three minutes into the second half and suffering a 2-0 non-conference loss.

Statistically, the game was even. Both teams attempted 12 shots, while the Cardinals owned a 7-4 edge in shots on a goal and 4-3 edge in corner kicks. The difference came in the Hawks’ ability to drive to the net and create chaos.

Senior forward Jessica Felix attempted six shots, but didn’t put any on goal, while freshman forward Ella Wolfard put two of her three shots on goal.

The Hawks will play a pair of road games at Great Lakes Valley Conference opponents — neither game counts as a league contest — to wrap up the non-conference portion of the schedule. Quincy travels to Maryville on Friday and Truman State next Sunday.
