Talton breaks JWCC single-game 3-point record as Trail Blazers outlast Warriors in overtime
QUINCY — When Jeremiah Talton was deciding where the best college fit would be, the former Quincy High School all-state basketball player wanted to find a program with an offense tailor-made for his game.
“I’m a shooter,” Talton said at the time.
Opponents of the John Wood Community College men’s basketball team are figuring out just how good of a shooter the 6-foot-6 wing is.
Tuesday night, Talton buried a single-game JWCC record nine 3-pointers in helping push the Trail Blazers to their first in-region victory of the season with an 86-83 overtime victory over Rend Lake at the Student Activity Center.
Talton finished with 39 points, going 13 of 26 overall from the field and 9 of 15 from 3-point range while adding nine rebounds and two assists. His 3-pointer with 51 seconds remaining in regulation tied the game at 71 and forced overtime.
He made his only field goal of the extra period 46 seconds in as his 3-pointer gave the Trail Blazers the lead for good. Logan Robbins and Braylon Diggs followed with layins to extend the lead to three possessions.
The Warriors trimmed the deficit to 82-79 on Jackson Creel’s 3-pointer with 1:08 to play, but Robbins made a pair of free throws with 55 seconds left and Talton knocked down from the charity stripe with 11 seconds to go to preserve the victory.
Jenson Whiteman added 17 points for JWCC, while Joshua Talton added 15. The Trail Blazers outrebounded the Warriors 46-32 and shot 45 percent from 3-point range.
