Sit down with the AD: Brad Hoyt discusses the future of JWCC athletics

QUINCY — Brad Hoyt thrives on chasing championship moments.

The John Wood Community College men’s basketball coach places such a high priority on that concept his players use the “championships are cool” mantra whenever they discuss expectations and goals. The other JWCC coaches are embracing the idea, too.

It’s why Hoyt, who also serves as the JWCC athletic director, is confident the Trail Blazers will find themselves playing for plenty of titles yet again in the upcoming seasons.

Last year, despite the schedules being jumbled by the coronavirus pandemic, JWCC reached the region or district championship game in four of the seven sports it offers. The men’s basketball team was the only one to win and earn a bid to the national tournament, but for burgeoning programs like men’s soccer and women’s volleyball, their championship moments were steps in the right direction.

And the baseball team’s run to the region title game was as entertaining and enthralling as any title pursuit in recent memory.

It placed the Trail Blazers a step ahead of everyone else. No other school in Region 24 played in more than two championship games in those seven sports. The challenge will be to outplay everyone once more.

The JWCC athletic director sat down with Muddy River Sports editor Matt Schuckman to discuss the upcoming season and the future of Trail Blazers athletics.
