Second-half goals propel QU women’s soccer team to first victory of season

QUINCY — The Quincy University women’s soccer team broke through by scoring its first goal of the season in Friday’s neutral site loss to Bemidji State.

Sunday, the Hawks broke through for their first victory of the season.

Olivia Nelson and Daniella Segall scored second-half goals and the Hawks shut out Lewis over the final 45 minutes to earn a 3-1 victory in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener at Legends Stadium.

The Flyers outshot the Hawks 24-10 overall with QU senior goalkeeper Julia Mincher making 12 saves, including seven in the second half.

Quincy (1-3, 1-0 GLVC) took the lead in the 17th minute when Reegan Hess set up Ella Wolfard for her first goal of the season. Lewis (0-3-1, 0-1 GLVC) tied the game in the 36th minute and went to halftime knotted at 1. Five minutes into the second half, Hess connected with Nelson, who laced a low liner into the corner of the goal.

The Hawks doubled their lead in the 64th minute when Segall hit a shot into the upper corner of the goal from outside the penalty area.
