QU volleyball team captures title of own invitational by outlasting Upper Iowa in five sets

QUINCY — The Quincy University volleyball team was pushed to the limit to complete a sweep of the Quincy Invitational field on Saturday night.

The Hawks outlasted Upper Iowa 25-11, 23-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-12 in the final match of the weekend, ending the event with three victories and improving to 6-1 overall this season.

Forced to a fifth set, the Hawks responded by scoring five of the first seven points and led the Peacocks 8-3. However, Upper Iowa rallied to tie the set at 11 before back-to-back kills by junior outside hitter Emma Wijnbergen closed out the match.

Wijnbergen finished with 17 kills and 16 digs, while freshman outside hitter Susanna Beretti had 18 kills and 17 digs and freshman libero Amber Glen had 23 digs. Senior setter Brianna Merkel finished with 60 assists.

The Hawks won a pair of straight-set matches Friday, beating Edinboro 25-22, 25-22, 25-23 and Newman 25-15, 25-14, 25-21.

Against Edinboro, Wijnbergen finished with 17 kills and 11 digs, while sophomore middle blocker Alice Pavan had 13 kills and Merkel had 41 assists. Against Newman, Wijnbergen had 13 kills and senior outside hitter Luna Van Baars had 11 kills, while Merkel dished out 35 assists.

Wijnbergen and Pavan were named to the all-tournament team.
