QU volleyball team awaits NCAA Tournament selection show to discover if it hosts regional
EAST PEORIA, Ill. — The Quincy University women’s volleyball team’s fate rests in the hands of the NCAA Tournament selection committee now.
The Hawks were eliminated from the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on Friday, losing 25-21, 25-18, 25-21 to fourth-seeded Lewis in the semifinals at EastSide Centre and leaving them waiting until Sunday night to learn if they will play host to the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional.
Quincy (27-2) was the No. 1-ranked team in the region rankings prior to the GLVC Tournament — the top-ranked team come Sunday hosts the regional — and would have been guaranteed to hold onto that spot by winning the league championship.
However, with second-ranked Ferris State playing for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship on Saturday, there are no guarantees.
The Hawks will learn their fate during a live selection show at 9:30 p.m. Sunday, which will be streamed at ncaa.com.
The inability to string points together against the Flyers created this limbo. The Hawks lost the first two sets without winning three consecutive points at any time. They did string together four consecutive points late in the third set, but they trailed 23-15 prior to that.
Emma Wijnbergen led the Hawks with 13 kills, while Makayla Knoblauch had 28 assists.
