QU linebacker earns sprint football league’s top defensive honor
QUINCY — The inaugural season for the Quincy University sprint football team produced encouraging results, including one of the Midwest Sprint Football League’s top postseason individual honors.
Sophomore linebacker Ray Lingard was named the MSFL’s Defensive Player of the Year and was one of 11 Hawks recognized on the all-league teams.
Lingard led the Hawks with 72 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks.
Quarterback Taylor Klusmeyer, a Mendon Unity product, and wide receiver Exavior Hinton were first-team selections. Klusmeyer completed 71 of 132 passes for 818 yards and nine touchdowns. He also rushed for 329 yards and four touchdowns. Hinton caught 21 passes for 314 yards and four touchdowns.
Linebacker Jaree Jones was a first-team selection after collecting 54 tackles and eight tackles for loss.
QU kicker and punter Ethan Beroiza was a first-team pick after going 5 of 6 on field goals and averaging 28 yards per punt with two of 50 or more yards.
Wide receivers Camden Pye and Elijah Leasman were second-team selections, along with offensive lineman Derek Michelman. Three defensive backs — Kyson Jackson, Cordell Walker and Landyn Smith — were second-team picks.
