QUINCY — More than two decades have passed since Steve Hawkins last walked into Pepsi Arena to coach the first official practice of the college basketball season, but his expectations for the Quincy University men’s basketball players aren’t any different.

The Hawks better be prepared to tirelessly work to get better.

Saturday morning, the Hawks showed up willing to do so.

The second Hawkins era — he coached at QU from 1991-2000, winning 137 games and guiding the Hawks to three NCAA Tournament appearances — got underway with a practice emphasizing defense. The Hawks play their first of two exhibition games October 28 at the University of Illinois and open their season November 11 against Findlay in the GMAC/GLVC Challenge in Cedarville, Ohio.
