Palmyra’s Kroeger, Culver-Stockton’s Applewhite earn weekly honors from respective leagues
QUINCY — Maryville sophomore left-hander Jacob Kroeger, a Palmyra, Mo., native, and Culver-Stockton College outfielder Ronald Applewhite each earned weekly honors from their respective conferences.
Kroeger was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week after tossing a seven-inning shutout in a 6-0 victory against Drury last Saturday.
Kroeger opened with five hitless innings before allowing a single to lead off the sixth. He retired the next six batters in order to finish a complete-game one-hitter. He struck out a season-high 11 to win back-to-back starts.
Overall, the left-hander is 2-1 with a 4.11 ERA. He’s struck out 44 and walked 17 in 30 ⅔ innings.
Meanwhile, Applewhite picked up Heart of America Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors.
A senior outfielder from Richton Park, Ill., Applewhite hit .583 with five runs scored and 10 RBIs as the Wildcats went 4-0 during the week. He had three extra-base hits among his nine hits and went 4 for 8 with runners in scoring position and eight of his 10 RBIs came with two outs.
Overall, Applewhite is hitting .330 in 28 games with six doubles, six home runs, 28 RBIs and 16 stolen bases on 17 attempts.
