Offensive struggles in first half leave QU men’s basketball team facing deficit too big to overcome

BOLIVAR, Mo. — It’s as simple as this: The Quincy University men’s basketball team cannot continue playing from behind if it wants to succeed.

In five of the six losses the Hawks have sustained in 2025 — and one of the two victories — they have trailed at halftime. It was a 43-28 deficit Thursday night against Southwest Baptist at the Meyer Sports Complex they trailed dramatically to erase, getting as close as four in the final minutes.

Once again, it proved to be too much to overcome. The Bearcats held on for an 80-73 victory in Great Lakes Valley Conference play as the Hawks suffered their third consecutive loss.

The Hawks (8-11, 3-8 GLVC) shot 36.7 percent from the field and made just 2 of 15 3-pointers in the first half, contributing to the sizable deficit. The Bearcats shot 55.2 percent from the field in the first half.

Ethyn Brown led the Hawks with 20 points, while Max Booher had 15 points and Jake Hamilton finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
