BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Alex McCulla didn’t waste any time showing he belongs.

The Illinois State University freshman golfer, who graduated from Quincy Notre Dame last May, was the Redbirds low scorer at the season-opening Hoosier Collegiate Invitational at the Pfau Course at Indiana University.

McCulla posted a 1-over 214 to finish ninth individually. The Redbirds finished fourth in the 15-team field with Cincinnati and Illinois tying for the top spot, 17 strokes ahead of Illinois State. Indiana was third.

McCulla opened with a 1-under 70, shot a 2-over 73 in the second round and finished with an even-par 71 in which he had one birdie, one bogey and eight pars over the final 10 holes. He had four birdies and four bogeys on his first eight holes.

The Redbirds next tee it up September 20-21 at the Ram Masters Invitational hosted by Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo.
