Hawks’ offense grounded by Lewis pitching in GLVC doubleheader sweep
ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — The Quincy University baseball team only scored in three of 14 innings in a Saturday doubleheader loss to No. 18-ranked Lewis by scores of 4-3 and 10-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
The Hawks wrap series play with a single game on Sunday against the Flyers.
Quincy broke a scoreless tie in the opener when Matt Mateo hit a three-run two-out home run in the fifth. The homer was Mateo’s 11th this season, and he has 41 runs batted in.
Hawks starter Roman Harrison walked back-to-back hitters in the bottom of the fifth, and Lewis’ Mikey Kocen hit a three-run homer to tie the game.
A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth gave the Flyers the winning run. QU loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth, but Isaia Fudge hit into a fielder’s choice and JD Ortiz struck out.
Two Lewis errors allowed the first two Hawks to reach base in the seventh, and Ben Dahlof’s perfectly placed bunt down the third-base line loaded the bases. David Broughton then lined out to short, Harry Fandre hit a ground ball that led to a forceout at home, and Byron Blaise hit into a fielder’s choice to end the game.
Lewis took the lead in the second inning of the second game, scoring five runs. QU starter Kyle Manship walked four batters in the frame before he was pulled.
QU scored twice in the fifth on an RBI groundout from Fandre and a sacrifice fly by Huffman, but the Flyers’ Cain Headrick hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. Lewis added an unearned run in the inning, and Kocen hit a two-run homer in the sixth.
Blaise hit his first career home run for the Hawks with two outs in the seventh inning.
