Hawkins adds familiar face to QU basketball staff by bringing Walsh back as assistant coach

QUINCY — Add another familiar face to the Quincy University men’s basketball team’s sideline.

Tim Walsh, a former QU assistant, is returning to Pepsi Arena to be Steve Hawkins’ top assistant coach. Walsh served as an assistant coach under Hawkins from 1994-98 and also was on the Hawks’ staff for the 1986-87 season, which was the first of the NCAA Division II era for QU.

Hawkins, who coached at QU from 1991-99, was named the the Hawks’ head coach in mid-March.

A veteran coach with three decades of college experience under his belt, Walsh spent the past three seasons as the associated head coach at Mineral Area College, working alongside former QU assistant coach Luke Strege in making the Park Hills, Mo., team into one of the top NCJAA Division I programs.

Prior to joining Strege at Mineral Area College, Walsh served 10 seasons as an NCAA Division I assistant coach — nine at Idaho State University and one at Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Walsh has two head coaching stints on his resume. He was named interim coach at Eastern Arizona Community College mid-season in 2008 and led the Gila Monsters to a 15-4 record and a fifth-place finish at the NJCAA national tournament.

He also served three seasons as the head coach at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington, Iowa, with a 52-41 record. He also spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Southeastern.

Walsh worked was an assistant coach at Quincy High School and Payson Seymour as well.
