Hannibal’s Jones earns second-team All-MAAC after guiding Quinnipiac to third place in league

HANNIBAL, Mo. — Dezi Jones’ junior season proved to be one that made the men’s basketball coaches around the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference take note.

The Hannibal native received second-team All-MAAC honors this week after guiding Quinnipiac to a third-place finish in the regular-season standings. The 5-foot-10 guard led the Bobcats in scoring at 12.4 points per game to go along with 3.8 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game.

He scored 10 or more points in 22 of Quinnipiac’s 31 games and five or more assists 11 times.

In MAAC play, Jones averaged 14 points, 4.3 assists and 4.9 rebounds. He scored 21 or more points in two of the final four regular-season games, including a career-high 28 points against Rider. The Bobcats finished 20-11 overall and 11-9 in the MAAC, surpassing the 20-victory plateau for the fourth time as an NCAA Division I program.

Jones, who has 743 points in two seasons at Quinnipiac, will lead the Bobcats into the MAAC Tournament at 6 p.m. Thursday when they face either Manhattan or Marist in the quarterfinals at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
