QUINCY — For the seventh time in the past nine seasons, the John Wood Community College men’s basketball program has produced an All-American.

Sophomore forward Jarvis Jennings was named to the NJCAA Division II All-American third team, making him one of 30 players nationwide as selected by the NJCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Committee.

Jennings, who was a first-team All-American in 2021, helped the Trail Blazers reach the Region 24 championship game as he averaged 19.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. He led the Mid-West Athletic Conference in scoring, while shooting 43.6 percent from the field and 80.7 percent from the free-throw line.

A 1,000-point scorer in his career, Jennings was named both the MWAC Player of the Year and the Region 24 Player of the Year.

Jennings, a 6-foot-3 forward, is the first two-time All-American in program history.

Hawks unveil 2022 football schedule

QUINCY — The Quincy University football team is going to be able to get its feet under it without leaving home to start the season.

The Hawks unveiled their 2022 schedule late last week, and three of the four September games will be played at QU Stadium. Overall, the Hawks will play six of their 11 games at home.

“We are very excited with the way things are laid out for us this season and are very excited about where we stand right now and the opportunity we have to have a great season,” QU coach Gary Bass said.

Quincy will open its season at 6 p.m. September 1 against Glenville State

“It should make for an awesome atmosphere,” Bass said. “This will be the first Thursday night home game in Quincy University Football history from my knowledge.”

The Hawks will play another Thursday game the following week against Trinity College before traveling to Walsh in Week 3. They will close September by playing host to Ashland University on September 24 for homecoming.

Great Lakes Valley Conference play starts October 1 at Missouri S&T, followed by a home game against Kentucky Wesleyan. The final five weeks are against GLVC opponents, including Truman State visiting QU Stadium on October 29.

JWCC hires new women’s volleyball coach

QUINCY — John Wood Community College filled its vacant head women’s volleyball coaching position with a veteran coach.

Scott Weston has been hired to replace Madeleine Halford, who resigned in January to take a coaching position at a four-year school in Texas. Weston most recently coached at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa, and also coached at Bethel College, McCook Community College and Iowa Wesleyan University in the past decade.

“We are fortunate to be able to hire an experienced coach to continue our progress in our women’s volleyball program,” JWCC athletic director Brad Hoyt said. “His experience at both the four-year and two-year college level will provide an immediate boost to our program as we enter into year five of having women’s volleyball back on our campus.”
