College notebook: Anderson piles up assists, Hamm wins college tourney, GLVC honors go to two Hawks

ST. LOUIS — Seth Anderson’s newest moniker needs to be playmaker.

Even his younger brother has been on the receiving end of Anderson’s skills at creating scoring opportunities.

Anderson, a senior midfielder on the Saint Louis University men’s soccer team and a Quincy Notre Dame graduate, recorded his fourth assist of the season during Tuesday night’s game against Lipscomb and has been directly involved in six of the seven goals the Billikens have scored this season.

That includes the one Tanner Anderson scored during last Saturday’s 2-0 victory at Portland. It was the fifth career goal for the sophomore forward, who is Seth’s younger brother, and the second that came off an assist from his brother.

Seth Anderson has six goals and 15 assists in his career with 11 games remaining on the Billikens’ regular-season schedule.

Hamm’s crown earns MVC weekly honor

PEORIA, Ill. — Bradley University junior and Macomb product Connor Hamm was named the Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week after winning the Dolenc Invitational for his first collegiate victory.

Hamm established a new Bradley record when he opened the 54-hole event by shooting a 7-under 64 at Gateway National Golf Club in Madison, Ill., for the event hosted by SIU-Edwardsville. He shot a 4-under 67 in the second round and a 2-under 69 in the third round, leaving him with a 200 total.

That was five strokes better than the previous 54-hole record by a Bradley golfer. Hamm also helped the Braves record the lowest 54-hole team score in program history by shooting 846, eclipsing the prior record of 858.

Pair of QU athletes pick up GLVC honors

QUINCY — Two Quincy University student-athletes received weekly honors from the Great Lakes Valley Conference as goalkeeper George Roke was named the Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week and setter Elena Kasavica was named the Women’s Volleyball Setter of the Week.

Roke, a sophomore from England, helped the Hawks go 1-0-1 in two games, including a 2-1 victory over No. 8 Purdue Northwest and a 1-1 tie with No. 24 Lewis. Roke made nine saves against Purdue Northwest and 10 saves against Lewis.

Kasavica, a freshman from Serbia, led the Hawks to a 4-0 weekend in the Hawk Invitational at Pepsi Arena by directing an offense that averaged 15.1 kills per set and hit .259 overall. Kasavica tallied 200 assists with 51 digs, five kills, three aces and three blocks. 

Three C-SC receive weekly conference honors

CANTON, Mo. — The Heart of America Athletic Conference honors three Culver-Stockton College student-athletes for their performances last week.

Delaney Straus and Logan Lucas were named Cross Country Women’s and Men’s Runners of the Week, respectively, for their performances at the Luther All-American Invitational last Saturday, while libero Kyla Ellis earned Women’s Volleyball Defender of the Week during the Wildcats’ 5-0 week.

Straus, a junior and Marion County graduate, was honored for the third consecutive week by the Heart. Straus set a personal best at the 5-kilometer distance and placed seventh in 19 minutes, 46.8 seconds, topping her previous best by one second.

Lucas, a senior and Monroe City graduate, broke his own individual school record while helping the team also set a school record at the 4-mile distance. Lucas finished 14th overall in a field of 125 runners in 21:30, bettering his old mark by seven seconds. In addition, Lucas helped the Wildcats post an overall time of 2:00:35, beating the previous mark set last season of 2:03:03.

Ellis, a senior from O’Fallon, Ill., registered 119 total digs in the five victories, recording 20 or more digs in three matches, including a season-high 33 in a four-set victory over Cottey (Mo.). In addition, Ellis had a serve reception percentage of 93.2, with nine errors on 132 attempts. She also recorded 23 assists.

Bass earns first victory at Virginia-Wise

ATHENS, W.Va. — Former Quincy University football coach Gary Bass earned his first victory as the University of Virginia-Wise skipper last week when the Cavaliers went on the road and beat Concord University 28-0.

It was the first time Virginia-Wise had won at Concord since 2007 and the first shutout in the series history. The Cavaliers play their home opener this Saturday against Catawba, which is Bass’ alma mater.
