QUINCY — For the first time since Jirehl Brock stepped on the Iowa State University campus and the first time in Matt Campbell’s coaching tenure, the Iowa State football team took the Cy-Hawk Trophy back to Ames.

Saturday’s 10-7 victory over Iowa at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Iowa, ended the Hawkeyes’ six-game win streak in the cross-state series.

Brock, the former Quincy High School all-state running back, played a pivotal role in making it happen.

The Cyclones trailed 7-3 with the ball on the 1-yard line following a Hawkeyes fumble and proceeded to drive 99 yards on 21 plays spanning 11 minutes, 49 seconds to score the game-winning touchdown on Xavier Hutchinson’s 8-yard reception with 8:27 to play in regulation.

Brock had eight carries for 24 yards on the drive, gaining one first down. He finished with a career-high 27 carries and 100 yards, giving him back-to-back 100-yard games. He lost a fumble at the goal line in the first half, but was as steady and tough as needed at the most critical time in the game.

“His ability and resiliency to come back with some of those runs was critical for this football team in the heat of the moment,” Campbell said.

Here is a look at how some other area products fared on the college gridiron last weekend:

• Pittsfield graduate Korbyn Personett, a returning NCAA Division III All-American, continues to pile up tackles for loss for Monmouth College. The senior defensive end had seven tackles, three tackles for loss and two sacks in a 48-0 victory over Grinnell. Personett has 4.5 tackles for loss in the Fighting Scots’ first two games.

• Illini West graduate Carter Boyer played a significant role in the Fighting Scots’ victory as well. Boyer, the senior starting quarterback, threw four touchdown passes while completing 16 of 25 passes for 309 yards. He also led Monmouth with 61 yards rushing as he scored on a 61-yard run in the fourth quarter. Boyer also had a 42-yard touchdown pass in the season opener against Wartburg.

• Hannibal graduate Shamar Griffith helped Truman State get back on track. A fifth-year senior who transferred from Missouri Western, Griffith scored his first touchdown as a Bulldog on a 12-yard run in a 27-20 victory at South Dakota Mines in Rapid City, S.D. Griffith finished with 16 carries for 36 yards.

• Quincy Notre Dame graduate Jonny Bottorff saw time along the offensive line for Missouri Western in a 35-19 victory at Fort Hays State that moved the Griffons to 2-0 in the MIAA. The Griffons rushed for 311 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 6.3 yards per carry. Through two games, Missouri Western’s offensive line has paved the way for 652 yards rushing and has allowed only two sacks.
