Three Quincy Gems infielders receive Prospect League postseason honors

QUINCY — The Quincy Gems infield proved to be as good as any in the Prospect League.

Three of the four infield positions on the league’s West Conference all-star team were Gems as first baseman Jake Skrine, shortstop Gino D’Alessio and third baseman Matt Schark earned postseason accolades.

Skrine, a junior from Indiana University, finished third in the league with a .367 average, collecting 58 hits in 158 at-bats over 40 games. He had five doubles, two triples, nine home runs and 45 RBIs. He also stole eight bases.

D’Alessio, a redshirt sophomore from Quincy University, played 29 games before being sidelined with an injury. He hit .404 with 44 hits in 109 at-bats and collected five doubles, one triple, five home runs and 30 RBIs.

Schark, a sophomore from Jefferson College, set the Prospect League record with 68 RBIs in 58 games. He hit .298 with 14 doubles and 16 home runs, which ranked second in the league. He also was second in strikeouts with 62. He stole nine bases and added six sacrifice flies.

The Gems finished the season with a 27-32 record and in last place in the West Conference’s Great River Division.
