Three area eighth grade girls basketball teams reach IESA state tournament

The Quincy Junior High School eighth grade girls basketball team led a trio of teams advancing the Illinois Elementary School Association state tournaments by winning sectional championships Wednesday night.

Nauvoo-Colusa and Mendon Unity also advanced to the eight-team state tournament in Class 2A. QJHS is in the Class 4A bracket.

The Comets beat Alton 24-18 in the Rochester Sectional to improve to 21-0. QJHS will face Lockport Oak Prairie at 1 p.m. Saturday in the state quarterfinals in Riverton. Should the Comets advance, their semifinal will be played at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Nauvoo-Colusa beat Havana 41-15 in the Greenview Sectional, while Unity advanced with a 33-31 victory over Hardin Calhoun in the Pawnee Sectional. The Vikings will face Lockport Kelvin Grove at 2:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals at Havana. The Mustangs take on Paris Crestwood at 10 a.m. The semifinals are scheduled for 5 and 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

In the Class 3A sectional at Auburn, Pleasant Plains knocked out Quincy Catholic with a 19-15 victory.
