Liberty, Pittsfield seventh grade girls basketball teams to play for state championships
The Liberty seventh grade girls basketball team will play for a state championship. So will the Pittsfield seventh graders. The Brown County and Quincy Junior High School eighth grade teams may, too.
Liberty reached the Illinois Elementary School Association Class 2A title game by beating Altamont 31-19 in the quarterfinals and Nokomis 36-19 in the semifinals Saturday at Paris High School. The Eagles (27-1) will face Havana (27-0) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for the title.
Weslee John led Liberty with 13 points against Altamont, while scoring 12 points against Nokomis. Riley Fessler scored 10 points against Nokomis.
In Class 3A, Pittsfield beat Staunton 30-9 in the quarterfinals and Washington 58-28 in the semifinals Saturday at Auburn High School. The Braves (26-0) will face Paris Mayo (25-3) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the championship.
Reese Ramsey led Pittsfield with eight points against Staunton, while scoring 32 points against Washington. Kinlee Griggs scored 12 points against Washington.
In the eighth grade state tournament, Brown County (22-2) will play Abingdon-Avon in the Class 2A sectional Wednesday at Abingdon. In Class 4A, Quincy will play Edwardsville Liberty in the Wednesday sectional at Chatham Glenwood.
