Spring game gives QU football program opportunity to showcase growth
QUINCY — Gary Bass put himself in the crosshairs.
His team then took aim at ending the spring the right way.
During Saturday afternoon’s build-up to the Quincy University football program’s spring game, the Hawks’ sixth-year coach willingly climbed into a dunk tank and got dumped into the water during a tailgate party a short walk from QU Stadium.
When the fun and games ended, the Hawks went to work.
Senior wide receiver Jalen Lawrence caught a touchdown pass from Tionne Harris on the first offensive possession and hauled in a scoring pass from Michael Valdovinos later in the controlled scrimmage as the record-setting offense continued to show its big-play potential.
The defense, under new defensive coordinator Michael Pannone, proved it would be faster to the football, more energetic and capable of forcing turnovers.
