Doggy Paddlers score 13 consecutive runs, split home doubleheader with LumberKings

Doggy Paddlers

QUINCY — The Quincy Doggy Paddlers’ never-say-die attitude allowed them to earn a doubleheader split with the first-half Northwest Division champion Clinton LumberKings on Saturday at QU Stadium.

In game two of the twinbill, the Doggy Paddlers trailed 5-0 entering the bottom of the second before rattling off 13 consecutive runs — 10 with two outs in an inning — to rally for a 13-7 victory after a 15-11 LumberKings win in game one.

The Doggy Paddlers took the lead for good with a seven-run fourth inning, highlighted by a two-out, two-run opposite field single by Tommy Harrison to bring Quincy within one and a little league grand slam by Brady Kindhart, who hit a ground ball to shortstop Brytton Clements with the bases loaded and rounded the bases thanks to two throwing errors on one play.

The Doggy Paddlers tacked on five more runs in the fifth, capped by a two-run single down the right field line and a Krew Bond RBI single to center field with two outs.

Anthony Sorrentino earned the victory by completing five innings after giving up four runs in the first, which included a three-run home run by Caden Frommelt. Sorrentino pitched scoreless third, fourth and fifth frames before handing the ball off to Noah Wilder for the final two innings. The win was field manager Brad Gyorkos’ 100th as a Prospect League manager.

The Doggy Paddlers trailed 13-0 in game one but scored 11 runs in the final four innings and were two baserunners from bringing the tying run to the plate, but Skylar Graham flew out to right field to end the game.

Quincy (10-15, 1-1 second half) will host the O’Fallon Hoots Sunday at 5 p.m.
