Law-abiding outcome: Hornets score three times in ninth inning to hand Raiders first loss
QUINCY — The Quincy Notre Dame softball team fought the Law and the Law won.
With two outs in the top of the ninth inning Wednesday and Brown County having already scored once in the frame to take the lead, the Raiders chose to intentionally walk Karsyn Moorman after a passed ball allowed both runners on base to move into scoring position.
Cortni Law capitalized on that decision.
The Hornets third baseman drove a single through the left side of the infield, driving in both Katey and Klare Flynn to give Brown County the cushion it needed to finally stave off a QND rally and earn a 6-5 victory at the Backyard.
The three-run ninth inning uprise marked the third time in a battle of unbeaten teams the Hornets had taken the lead. Each time, the Raiders rallied, including in the bottom of the ninth.
Laela Hernandez-Jones and Caitlin Bunte led off the ninth with back-to-back singles, and after Haley Schertel was called out for offensive interference while trying to bunt, Eryn Cornwell hit into a fielder’s choice as Hernandez-Jones was forced out at third base.
Abbey Schreacke followed with a two-out single to plate one run, and Brooke Boden singled to drive in another run. Lindsey Fischer walked to load the bases before Payton Stupavsky popped out to Law, who made an over-the-shoulder catch to end the game.
Brown County improves to 9-0, while QND falls to 6-1.
Taryn Moorman earned the victory for the Hornets, allowing four earned runs and 10 hits while striking out nine and walking two. Five different Brown County players had two hits apiece, while the Flynn twins each scored twice and Karsyn Moorman hit a solo home run.
Cornwell took the loss, allowing 12 hits while striking out six and walking three. She also went 3 for 5 at the plate, while Schreacke went 3 for 4 and Fischer belted a two-run home run.
