GRANITE CITY, Ill. — Ashley Walbring did everything she could to give the Quincy High School girls soccer team an opportunity to win its Class 3A regional semifinal Tuesday night.

The senior goalkeeper even stopped a penalty kick.

The one thing she couldn’t do was score.

The Blue Devils’ biggest bugaboo all season — the ability to score — proved costly in the end as they suffered a 4-0 loss to Granite City in the Granite City Regional. The fourth-seeded Warriors advance to face top-seeded O’Fallon in Friday’s regional championship.

“Ashley was incredible,” Quincy coach Travis Dinkheller said.

Granite City took a 1-0 lead by scoring with 1:49 remaining in the first half. It stayed that way until the Warriors scored with 11 minutes remaining in regulation. Two goals followed in the final eight minutes as the Blue Devils ended their season with a 6-13-1 record.

“Anytime a season ends, it’s hard,” DInkheller said. “It’s hard to swallow. You get attached to the group of kids that you have.”
