After winning program-best 13 matches, QU men’s tennis team bows out of GLVC postseason tournament
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Quincy University men’s tennis team’s successful season ended Friday with a 4-2 loss to Missouri-St. Louis in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference postseason tournament at Sacred Heart-Griffin High School.
Quincy, which won a program-best 13 matches this season, made its second straight postseason appearance.
The No. 2 doubles team of Gianni Lopez and Rodrigo Coello Trevino and No. 3 doubles pairing of Marko Cucuk and Gerard Abad Puig both lost their matches by 6-2 scores, allowing UMSL to secure the doubles point. The top-flight match featuring QU’s Joseph Restrepo and Inigo Villacampa was halted with the Tritons holding a 5-4 edge.
Quincy responded in singles play. Villacampa, a sophomore from Tarragona, Spain, delivered a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles over UMSL’s Alejandro Ley. Restrepo, a senior from Cali, Colombia, followed suit at No. 2 singles, winning 6-4, 6-3. However, Lopez lost 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and Coello Trevino was defeated 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
At No. 6 singles, Pablo Mateos Niella forced a third set but lost 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, allowing the Tritons to clinch the match. Abad Puig’s match at No. 4 singles was left unfinished in the third set.
