Guthrie climbs closer to top 30 at Q-School’s final stage as wind impacts leaderboard
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — The wind won the day, but Luke Guthrie found a way to survive.
In fact, the Quincy native bettered his position.
Guthrie shot a 2-over 72 on the Dye’s Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass and finished the second round of the Korn Ferry Tour Q-School’s final stage tied for 33rd in the 170-player field. That’s a nine-spot move up the leaderboard after Guthrie finished the first round at 1-over and tied for 42nd.
The top five players at the end of the 72-hole event will earn their PGA Tour card for the 2025 season. The players finishing Nos. 6-30 receive status on the Korn Ferry Tour and are guaranteed at least 12 starts.
After multiple players broke par during the first day of play, not a single golfer broke par on the Sawgrass Country Club course. Meanwhile, only 10 sub-par rounds were posted at the Dye’s Valley Course.
Guthrie started the day chasing one of those rounds, playing the first five holes in 1-under. However, he bogeyed Nos. 6 and 8 — both par-4s — and made the turn at 1-over. He had a birdie between two bogeys on the back nine as well.
After hitting just 4 of 14 fairways in the first round, Guthrie hit 9 of 14 fairways in the second round and made 11 of 18 greens in regulation.
Guthrie will tee it up at 8:20 a.m. Saturday in the third round on the Sawgrass Country Club course alongside Kensei Hirata and Austin Hitt.
