Brown County seventh graders rally to win IESA girls basketball state championship

RIVERTON, Ill. — Steadily, the Brown County seventh grade girls basketball team chiseled away the deficit until taking control of its fate in the fourth quarter Thursday night.

The Hornets outscored Spring Valley Kennedy 8-4 in the final quarter and rallied for a 31-28 victory in the Illinois Elementary School Association Class 7-2A state championship game at Riverton High School.

Brown County finishes its season with a 27-0 record.

Spring Valley Kennedy jumped to a 12-6 lead in the first quarter, but the Hornets limited the Wildcats to five points in the second quarter and 11 points in the second half.

Brown County’s Paityn Havens scored a game-high 17 points, while the Hornets’ Lydia Ransom finished with eight points.
