DECATUR, Ill. — Ty Novosel held on.

Even par through the first 14 holes Monday in the Class 3A Decatur Sectional at Hickory Point Golf Course, the Quincy High School sophomore boys golfer made bogey on two of his final four holes, but he was steady enough to finish tied for seventh individually at 2-over 74 and earn a state berth.

Novosel will tee it up Oct. 18-19 at the Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington, Ill., in the Class 3A state tournament.

His teammate wasn’t as fortunate. QHS junior Hunter St. Clair also was 1-over through 14 holes, but he played the final three holes in 5-over to finish tied for 20th at 6-over 78. The top 10 individuals not on the advancing three teams qualify for state, which meant shooting 76 or better Monday.

At the Class 2A girls sectional at Weibring Golf Course in Normal, Ill., QHS senior Ashley Walbring shot a 100 and missed the chance to qualify.
