QU men’s and women’s soccer teams shut out at home, both still winless in non-conference play
QUINCY — Two games into each of their respective seasons, the Quincy University men’s and women’s soccer programs find themselves in the same position.
Winless and scoreless.
The QU men suffered a 2-0 loss to Northern Michigan on Sunday in their home opener at Legends Stadium, while the QU women suffered a 1-0 loss to Davenport. Both teams are 0-2 with the men scheduled to face Purdue Northwest at 2 p.m. Wednesday at home. The women face Bemidji State in their final non-conference game at 5 p.m. Friday in Fayette, Iowa.
The Hawks open Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a doubleheader next Sunday at Legends Stadium.
For the men, they have faced the top and bottom of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference in their first two games. The Hawks lost 1-0 to Wisconsin-Parkside, which was the GLIAC preseason favorite, on the road on Thursday. Northern Michigan tied for last in the GLIAC poll.
Sunday, the Wildcats scored in the 23rd and 67th minutes to gain the advantage. Northern Michigan outshot Quincy 17-6 and allowed only two shots on goal. The Wildcats also had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
In the women’s game, Davenport scored on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute. The Panthers had a 15-10 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.QU goalkeeper Julia Mincher made six saves.
