Tigers fly past Eagles in home opener

CANTON, Mo. — The Canton softball team made quick work of Knox County on Thursday. The Tigers scored 12 runs in the first inning of a 15-0 three-inning victory. Canton’s first six batters of the game reached base, and the Tigers took advantage of three errors and four walks in the opening frame. Brenna Brewer’s bases clearing double in the bottom of the third put the mercy rule into effect. Brewer drove in four runs, while Macy Glasgow plated two runs and scored three. Each Tigers starter scored a run and seven of the nine had an RBI.

Tigers run away from Panthers

CENTER, Mo. — Bronwyn Harding and Lilah Tischer each drove in three runs for the Mark Twain softball team in its 11-1 victory over Palmyra. Tischer broke the ice with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the first and had another run-scoring base hit in the second. Harding drove in Amaris Melvin on a ground ball that resulted in a rundown between third and home. Melvin scored on an error by Panthers third baseman Avery Wisehart. Harding’s single in the bottom of the fifth allowed Shaelyn Shepherd and Ericka Gilbert to score and gave the Tigers a run-rule victory. Harding surrendered just two hits in the pitcher’s circle.

Pirates earn conference victory over Kirksville

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. — The Hannibal soccer team upended Kirksville 3-1 in North Central Missouri Conference action. Senior center back Kevin Westhoff netted two goals, while senior forward Bodie Rollins scored the other Pirates goal. The Pirates welcome Fort Zumwalt South to Veterans Field Monday in a rematch of last season’s Class 3 District 4 semifinal.

Raiders finish fourth in loaded field at U-High Tourney

NORMAL, Ill. — The Quincy Notre Dame golf team continued their strong start to the season with a fourth place finish at the Normal U-High Tourney at Weibring Golf Club. Nancy Scholz paced the Raiders by shooting an 85. Meredith Eversman shot an 87, Natalie Druffel an 89, and Belle Boudreau a 90. The Raiders shot a 67-over 351 as a team, 16 shots behind third place Sacred Heart Griffin and 21 shots behind tournament winner Normal University High, which edged out O’Fallon by one shot.
