Raiders beat Crimsons for first victory, show improvements over final two games of tourney
QUINCY — The Quincy Notre Dame boys soccer team finally got its breakthrough. Quincy High School is still looking for the same.
The Raiders picked up their first victory of the season Saturday, beating Jacksonville 4-0 in thee first of two games on the day in the Quincy Recycle/QND Tournament at Advance Physical Therapy Field. The Raiders lost their finale 1-0 against Orchard Farm (Mo.).
Meanwhile, at Flinn Stadium, the Blue Devils suffered a pair of losses, falling 5-0 to Clayton (Mo.) and 3-0 to Lindbergh (Mo.).
Saturday morning against Jacksonville, a three-goal flurry in the final 15 minutes of the first half changed things.
On a ball played from the left wing by Nolan Heck, QND’s TJ Togarepi initially had it go behind him and carry to the right. He regrouped, collected it and placed a shot high out of the goalkeeper’s reach that floated under the crossbar for the first goal.
With 10 minutes remaining in the half, QND’s Rylan Fischer ripped a shot from 35 yards out that deflected off Sullivan Walker’s back and rainbowed on goal and over the keeper for a 2-0 advantage. The Raiders made it 3-0 before halftime Heck drove a corner kick to the back post where Fischer won the ball in the air and drove home a header.
In the second half, Kwamen Tchapda scored the Raiders’ final goal, punching in a rebound at the post.
Against Orchard Farm, the Raiders allowed a goal in the final five minutes of the first half and couldn’t generate an equalizer. QND finished the weekend 1-2 and will face Hannibal at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Advance Physical Therapy Field.
The Blue Devils, who went 0-3 on the weekend, travel to Rock Island Alleman on Tuesday to open Western Big 6 Conference play.
