Adams County Speedway plans move to Friday nights in 2025

QUINCY — Adams County Speedway plans on moving its primary race night to Fridays in 2025.

The track’s new owner, Jeff DeLonjay, who took over operation of the .295-mile facility in mid-July and has been busy concentrating on physical improvements at the 8000 Broadway site, told Muddy River Sports of his Friday night plan. 

Since opening in 1975, the speedway has traditionally run on Sunday nights, but DeLonjay, 42, felt the time was right to make the change in an effort to better serve its fans and attract a larger base of racers from the Tri-State area and beyond.

DeLonjay, a local businessman and car owner (he has two sons who are drivers at the track), said he made the decision after conferring with a number of others, including Jim and Tammy Lieurance, who are in their third year as track promoters. 

“Our ultimate goal is to race on Friday nights next year — and use Sunday nights as a makeup date (for rain),” said DeLonjay, who worked at the track as a teenager.

DeLonjay feels a switch to Friday nights would help the speedway in more ways than one.

“We might lose a few drivers, but overall I think we’ll gain,” he said. “Plus, racing on Sunday nights has always put (Quincy at a disadvantage) when it came to drivers who might get torn up on Friday or Saturday at another track and then have to miss Sunday at Quincy.”

Improvements continue

At the moment, DeLonjay’s biggest problem is not having enough hours in the day.

When weather permits, there is normally work going on at the track from sunrise to sunset. Overall maintenance, clean up, work on plumbing improvements, adding more concrete walkways and numerous other cosmetic projects will continue through the end of the season and into the fall.

If not before, shortly after the end of the racing schedule in mid-to-late September or early October, new toilets will be installed as part of continued restroom improvements.

New fencing, track improvements following season

Once the racing has concluded, new poles and fencing will be installed along the spectator side of the track. A new and better drainage system is also scheduled.

“New dirt is also coming,” DeLonjay said. “We’ll be creating a racing surface that will allow for three lanes — bottom, middle and top. “We have 15 semi-loads coming. The track will be a lot better next season.

“By this time next year, the (facility) will be unrecognizable,” DeLonjay said. “We’re plugging away, and we’ll just keep trying to plug away.” 

DeLonjay has repeatedly praised former track owners Bob and Jeff Scott (whose family ran the track from its inception through 2007) for their assistance in this ongoing renovation project. DeLonjay said the Scotts have offered both their knowledge and equipment to help in the track upgrade.

“I can’t say how grateful I am,” DeLonjay said. “As a teenager, I worked for Bob.”

Sunday night schedule

Following an off date last Sunday for the Adams County Fair, racing returns to the Bullring with a full schedule of classes for Sunday night.

Crate late models, modifieds, sport mods, stocks, 4-Cylinders and Crown Vics will all race. The first green flag will be around 6:30 p.m.

Current points leaders by division are:

Crate late models: Jason Perry 463, Denny Woodworth 449, Tommy Elston 428.

Modifieds: Austen Becerra 531, Dave Wietholder 518, Jacob Rexing 477.

Sport mods: Tanner Klingele 229, Reed Wolfmeyer 229, Logan Cumby 222.

Stocks: Robert Cottom 307, Jacob Rexing 307, Rudy Zaragoza 298.

4-Cylinders: Jaden DeLonjay 563, Kim Abbott 419.

Crown Vics: Jacob Jones 144, Steve Meyer 142, Brian Kaylor 141.

The only defending track champ currently atop a points standing is Becerra.

Points racing ends Aug. 25.
