College notebook: Former JWCC women’s coach heads to Colorado, Loos receives all-region nod, Kirn wins Cape Cod opener

QUINCY — Lauren Bogle decision to resign as the John Wood Community College women’s basketball coach in early May was partially based on a desire to join a staff where she could learn more from a seasoned head coach.

“It’s time to go learn under someone new now, and that means finding another spot,” Bogle said at the time.

She’s found what she believes is the perfect opportunity.

Bogle has been named an assistant coach at Western Colorado University, an NCAA Division II program in Gunnison, Colo. The Mountaineers are coached by Adam Jacobson, who has compiled a 13-41 record in two seasons at the helm. He served as the head coach at North Dakota State College of Science for two seasons prior to that.

The Trail Blazers went 17-13 overall and 9-5 in the Mid-West Athletic Conference last winter. Bogle put together a 26-32 in two seasons at JWCC despite playing with a roster of less than 10 players both years.

“I am ready to bring the energy and support needed to help the program be successful,” Bogle said in a press release. “I am already invested in this team and anxious to get with our women so we can, together, make the next steps to continued growth.”

Payson’s Loos earns all-region honor

CHARLESTON, Ill. — Eastern Illinois University senior shortstop Lucas Loos wrapped up his collegiate baseball career with a first-team All-Midwest Region honor from the American Baseball Coaches Association and Rawlings.

Loos, a Payson native who began his college career at John Wood Community College, was a first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference selection this spring. He set the EIU single season record with 23 home runs while posting the second-most doubles in a season.

He finished the season with a .372 batting average, 77 hits, 56 runs scored, 61 RBIs and an .821 slugging percentage.

He became the 15th EIU player to earn ABCA/Rawlings all-region honors and the fourth in the last four seasons.

Kirn stellar in Cape Cod League debut

COTUIT, Mass. — Griffin Kirn’s return to the Cape Cod League got off to a sterling start.

The Quincy Notre Dame graduate drew the opening day start for the Harwich Mariners, and the left-handed starter lasted five innings. He allowed two runs and two hits, while striking out four and walking two in earning the victory in a 13-2 victory over the Cotuit Kettleers.

Kirn, the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year for Quincy University in the spring, did a two-week stint with the Mariners last summer as a late-season reliever. 

Kirn finished his junior season with a 7-1 record and a 3.00 earned run average in 78 innings over 14 appearances, including 13 starts. He struck out 96, walked 25 and allowed opponents to hit just .235 against him, earning All-Midwest Region from the NCBWA and the D2CCA and an honorable mention All-American nod from the D2CCA.

He is transferring to the University of West Virginia for his final season of eligibility.
