Championship matches set in Quincy Tennis Association city singles tournament

QUINCY — And then there were eight.

After a busy Saturday of tennis at the Quincy Racquet Club and the Greeman Tennis Center in Reservoir Park, four championship matches are set in the Quincy Tennis Association city singles tournament.

Familiar foes Zach Willing and Ethan Arns will meet in the men’s open championship. Willing, the three-time defending champion, defeated Connor Brown 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and Ross Smith 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals. Arns dispatched of Jason Fannin 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and advanced past Zach Willing’s father, Todd, 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals.

Arns coached Zach Willing for four years at Quincy University, and this marks the fourth year in a row the two have squared off in the city tournament.

“It’s going to be fun,” Willing said. “It’s fun to share the court with the old coach.”

Having spent so much time on the court together, the two are familiar with each other’s games.

“We know each other well, and we play very similar games,” Arns said. “I can see a winner coming before he even hits the ball.”

In the men’s 3.5 singles, Bob Catalpa upset No. 1 seed Randy Davis 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals. Catalpa will face Peter Damm, who took out the No. 2 seed David Lieber 6-0, 6-4.

The men’s 4.0 singles final will feature Drake Dodd and Trevor Nelson. After taking out No. 1 seed Drew Koester on Friday, Dodd defeated Ben Klingner and Rob Hernandez in straight sets to reach the finals. Nelson defeated No. 2 seed Rick Crider and No. 3 seed Scott Koontz without dropping a set on Saturday.

The other championship match on Sunday will feature Lydia Miller and Claire Petersen in women’s 3.5 singles. All four finals are scheduled to begin at 10 am at the Greeman Tennis Center in Reservoir Park.
