Southeastern seventh-grade team wins by rout in sectional, advances to IESA state tournament

VIRGINIA, Ill. — The Southeastern Junior High School seventh-grade boys basketball team from Augusta punched its ticket to the Illinois Elementary School Association state tournament with a 57-24 victory over Bunker Hill Wolf Ridge in the Class 7-1A sectional at Virginia on Monday night.

The Suns (18-4) advance to the Class 7-1A state tournament at East Peoria Central Junior High School. They will play Mendota Holy Cross (16-3) at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, in a quarterfinal game. If the Suns win, they will play again on Saturday against the winner of the game between Cambridge (19-0) and Ottawa Marquette (21-2).

The championship and third-place games are scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 8.

The Suns, coached by Bryan Schullian, have an enrollment of 75 students. They advanced to the sectional by defeating Griggsville-Perry 33-26 in last week’s regional at Griggsville.
