Quincy Shootout: Principia, Wasatch Academy bookend Saturday slate with victories
QUINCY — Here is a look at what transpired Saturday during the sixth Quincy Shootout at Blue Devil Gym:
Principia 74, Winchester West Central 49
An 11-point lead at halftime ballooned as the Panthers imposed their will in the paint and in transition. Principia shot 44.9 percent from the floor and held a 43-29 edge in rebounding, collecting 17 offensive rebounds. The Panthers also forced 18 turnovers.
Quentin Coleman led Principia with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Jaedyn Jones added 14 points. Chance Little led the Cougars with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Zack Evans had 13 points and six rebounds.
Chicago Curie 58, Father Tolton 55
After going 8 of 28 from the field in the first half, Curie shot 53 percent in the second half and rallied to grab the victory. Mason Minor led the Condors with 16 points, while Carlos Harris III scored 12 points and Taevion Collier grabbed 12 rebounds. Zay Wilson led the Trailblazers with 17 points, while Javar Galbreath had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Millard North 63, Chaminade 50
The Mustangs outscored the Red Devils 17-8 in the second quarter to take control. Elijah Gaeth led Millard North with 19 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Derek Rollins added 16 points. Chaminade, which shot just 36.7 percent from the field, was led by Collin Perry with 16 points.
iSchool of Lewisville 68, Chicago Simeon 55
The Cougars’ backcourt of Jaylen Jawal and Kal-El McNeilly controlled the game, combining for 35 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Jawal finished with 21 points and six boards to earn game MVP. Lorenzo Shields led Simeon with 21 points, while Rashad McKinnie had 18 points.
Peoria Richwoods 61, Lee’s Summit West 58
Lathan Sommerville, the 6-foot-9 forward bound for Rutgers, proved to be an imposing figure, scoring 27 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking three shots for the Knights. That effort included going 2 of 3 from 3-point range. Chaz Watson led the Titans with 25 points, while freshman Cameron Barnes finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Link Academy 80, The Burlington School 52
The Lions’ tenacious defense limited the Spartans to 28-percent shooting from 3-point range. Link’s Jasper Johnson went 5 pf 5 from 3-point range and scored 24 points, while James Brown had 10 points and eight rebounds. Josh Randolph led the Burlington School with 15 points.
Oak Cliff Faith Family 56, Vashon 44
The Wolverines, the No. 1-ranked team in Missouri Class 4, shot just 30 percent from the field in the second half. Doryan Okwuchekwa led the Eagles with 23 points, 10 rebounds, two blocked shots and two assists, while Isaac Williams had 13 points. Nassir Binion led Vashon with 16 points.
Wasatch Academy 87, Huntington Prep 80
The Tigers’ ability to handle the ball gave them the edge. They finished with 20 assists against just seven turnovers as John Mobley Jr. had 32 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists. Fischer Brown added 28 points for Wasatch Academy, going 6 of 12 from 3-point range. Ma Hagedorn went 6 of 12 from 3-point for Huntington Prep and finished with 24 points.
