NORMAL, Ill. — The No. 1 seed played like the No. 1 seed.

The Central-Southeastern girls basketball team’s defensive intensity frustrated and stymied Normal U-High from start to finish in Wednesday night’s 67-19 victory in the opening round of the small school bracket of the State Farm Holiday Classic at Normal Community High School.

It didn’t take long for the Panthers to impose their will. A Lauren Miller layin off a steal put CSE ahead 12-2 and forced U-High to call a timeout with 4:26 remaining in the first quarter. The Pioneers didn’t score in the second quarter until the 5:44 mark and the drought was worse in the second half.

U-High didn’t score its first points of the third quarter until 5:53 had elapsed as CSE opened the second half on a 16-0 run to go up 52-12.

Miller finished with 22 points, while Karly Peters had 12 points as 10 players scored for CSE.

Central-Southeastern (10-2) will face Stanford Olympia at 4 p.m. in the quarterfinals at Bloomington High School.
