Hawks put brakes on Miners’ run, close out GLVC victory

ROLLA, Mo. — The Quincy University women’s basketball team is figuring out how to finish.

Leading Missouri S&T by as many as 13 points in the third quarter Thursday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action, the Hawks stumbled. The Miners went on a 10-2 run to close the quarter and ultimately trimmed the deficit to a point a minute into the fourth quarter.

However, Quincy answered. A 7-0 run midway through the fourth quarter pushed the lead back to 10 points and the advantage never dropped below six points the final four minutes of a 64-57 victory at Gibson Arena.

The Hawks (2-5, 2-1 GLVC) earned their edge by dominating the boards on a night neither team shot the ball well.

Quincy outrebounded Missouri S&T 51-33, including grabbing 19 offensive rebounds that led to 14 second-chance points. Chomp Danso scored 10 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for the Hawks, and she blocked four shots.

Cymirah Williams led QU with 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and five other players had three or more rebounds.

The Hawks shot 39.4 percent from the field (26 of 66) and 33.3 percent from 3-point range (7 of 21) and managed to make only 5 of 12 free throws (47.1 percent). The Miners were worse, shooting 37.7 percent from the field, 14.3 percent from 3-point range and 47.1 percent from the line.
