Three individual titles, third-place team finish make for solid opening tourney for QHS wrestlers
ANTIOCH, Ill. — The Quincy High School wrestling team made a strong statement during its first tournament of the season.
The Blue Devils finished third in the 24-team Ted DeRousse Invitational on Saturday, capturing three individual championships. QHS racked up 356.5 points to finish behind Elmhurst IC Catholic and Marmion Academy.
IC Catholic has produced four individual state champions in the past three years, while Marmion Academy was the Class 3A state runner-up last season.
Individually for the Blue Devils, senior Owen Uppinghouse (165 pounds) senior Bryor Newbold (175) and sophomore Todd Smith (285) won titles.
Uppinghouse had a pinfall and a technical fall among his first three victories before pinning West Aurora’s Dayne Serio in 1 minute, 34 seconds in the semifinals. He stuck IC Catholic’s Joe Gliatta in 1:51 in the championship match.
Newbold pinned his first three opponents — all in the second period — and pinned Oak Lawn Richards’ Mike Tahenet in 2:36 in the semifinals. Newbold finished his title with a 4-1 victory over Hinsdale South’s Jovanni Piazza in the championship match.
Newbold also earned his 100th career victory during the tournament.
Smith won his first three matches by pinfall before scoring a 5-3 sudden victory over Mundelein’s Abisai Hernandez in the semifinals. In the championship, Smith beat Normal West’s Matt Hanold 9-4.
Hugh Sharrow took second at 113 pounds, winning his first four matches by pin before getting pinned by Yorkville Christian’s Aiden Larsen in the title match. Eli Roberts went 3-1 and placed fifth at 150 pounds, Brody Baker went 3-2 and took sixth at 145,
