Hawks suffer 40-point loss on road, shoot just 10 percent from 3-point range

ALLENDALE, Mich. — A rough start and a worse ending to the first half put the Quincy University men’s basketball team on a collision course with the wrong side of history.

Grand Valley State scored the first seven points of Saturday’s game at GVSU Fieldhouse Arena and closed the half on a 12-3 run, giving the Lakers all the momentum necessary for a 105-63 victory.

The 42-point margin is the first 40-point loss the Hawks have suffered since an 83-43 setback against Maryville on Jan. 6, 2018.

The Hawks trailed 7-0 before sophomore forward Mason Wujek broke the seal on the basket, scoring in the paint with 16:39 remaining in the first half. Isaiah Foster scored on the Hawks’ next possession, and the Hawks stayed within arm’s length the first 12 minutes, trailing 18-13.

The Lakers extended the lead to as many as 14 points and led 34-23 with 2:57 to go in the half after Quincy’s Nate Shockey made a pair of free throws. However, Grand Valley State outscored Quincy 12-3 the final three minutes, limiting the Hawks to three free throws in building a 46-26 lead.

Quincy scored six of the first seven points of the second half with three baskets in the paint, but Grand Valley State extended the lead 25 points before four full minutes of the half had elapsed.

The Hawks shot 35.7 percent from the field and went just 2 of 19 from 3-point range (10.5 percent), while getting dominated on the boards. The Lakers outrebounded the Hawks 50-24, grabbing 14 offensive rebounds and owning a 17-5 edge in second-chance points.

Nate Shockey led Quincy with 11 points off the bench as the five starters combined for just 28 points on 10-of-28 shooting. The Lakers shot 56 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range with six players reaching double figures.

QU completes its Michigan road trip with a 6 p.m. Monday game against Lake Superior State in Kalamazoo, Mich.
