PLEASANT PLAINS, Ill. — A record-setting season needed one final rally.

The Pleasant Plains volleyball team didn’t let that happen.

Illini West led the second set of Wednesday night’s Class 2A sectional championship game 13-12 and was in the process of overcoming losing the first set, just as it had in Monday’s semifinal victory over Petersburg PORTA.

This time, once the Chargers lost the lead, they never got it back. Pleasant Plains scored 13 of the match’s final 16 points and earned a 25-14, 25-16 victory to advance to Friday’s super-sectional against Breese Mater Dei.

Illini West’s season ends with a 34-5, which is the most single-season victories in program history. It also was the first sectional title game appearance in Illini West history and the first for a Carthage-based team since 1985.

Josie Bryan led the Chargers with 11 kills, while Corin Robinson had 13 digs and six assists. Reagan Reed added eight digs, four assists and two kills, while Kaelyn Ferrill had 10 digs and Madalyn Boyer had four service points and an ace.
