ST. LOUIS — The Quincy University baseball team’s recipe for success worked well Sunday.

The Hawks piled up runs, scoring 11 times and collecting 18 hits. Jay Hammel delivered a strong start as the right-hander allowed just two runs over seven innings. The bullpen finished it off with Chase Gockel and Tyler Carpenter each striking out the side in one inning of work apiece.

The end result was an 11-2 victory over Missouri-St. Louis and a Great Lakes Valley Conference series victory as the 13th-ranked Hawks won three of the four games.

Quincy (31-9, 19-5 GLVC) holds a one-game lead over Illinois-Springfield in the GLVC standings with two weekends remaining in the regular season. The Hawks play host to Drury beginning at 3 p.m. Friday at QU Stadium and travel to Rockhurst the final weekend.

The Hawks took the lead Sunday in the top of the first as Gino D’Alessio led off with a walk, Dustin Dupont singled and Luke Napleton singled to drive in the first run. Two outs later, Austin Simpson singled to score Dupont.

Quincy scored single runs in the third and fifth innings before plating three runs in the sixth as Dupont singled, Napleton doubled and Lance Logsdon followed with a run-scoring sacrifice fly. Zach Parks added a two-run single later in the frame.

Napleton added a two-run single in the seventh and Dupont had an RBI single in the eighth.

That was more than enough for Hammel, who struck out two, walked one and allowed seven hits. He relied on his defense for 12 flyouts and seven groundouts.

Dupont finished 4 for 5, while Napleton was 3 for 4 with four RBIs and Simpson and Parks both had three hits.
