Gem City dandy: Raiders’ Schreacke becomes top-scoring player at either Quincy high school
QUINCY — For Abbey Schreacke, the distractions tied to individual accomplishments have officially been laid to rest.
She now can fully concentrate on trying to help the Quincy Notre Dame girls basketball team win a second straight Class 2A state championship.
The 6-foot-1 wunderkind scored 22 points Friday night to lead the Raiders to an easy 61-40 victory over Bethalto Civic Memorial in the KHQA-American Family Insurance Superfan Shootout inside The Pit.
Those 22 points catapulted Schreacke into the No. 1 position among Quincy’s all-time girls basketball scoring leaders. Schreacke, who now has 2,297 points, eclipsed Quincy High School product Ruth Kipping, who scored 2,287 in a career that ended in 1998. Earlier this year, Schreacke passed QND all-time leader Jordan Frericks, who scored 1,907 before graduating in 2013.
What arguably has hit Schreacke the hardest was that her four-year career at Tenth and Jackson is hurriedly drawing to a close.
“It’s hard to believe that it’s all kind of winding down,” said Schreacke, who padded her stat sheet against Civic Memorial with 10 rebounds, six assists and five steals. “I’m just trying to get the most out of what time is left with this team.”
Schreacke scored 12 points in the first half, 10 in the second. She was equally effective from the perimeter, along the baseline and attacking the basket.
“I have no preference,” she said.
QND coach Eric Orne said Schreacke’s accomplishment was certainly a reason to celebrate, but he was simultaneously looking at the bigger picture.
“A new day, a new record for her,” Orne said. “But right now it’s about winning and getting ready for the postseason.”
Notre Dame is 26-1 and has won 19 in a row. QND has not lost since Dec. 4 when it dropped a 66-54 decision to Columbia (Mo.) Rock Bridge.
The Raiders are 11-0 at home, going into Saturday’s 6:30 p.m. Shootout game against South Shelby.
Schreacke said QND’s domination of Civic Memorial was a good sign. Although Civic Memorial (13-16) is struggling this season, it has long been one of the strongest programs in the Metro East. The Eagles are six-time defending Mississippi Valley Conference champs, finished fourth in last year’s Class 3A state tournament, have not had a losing record since the 2009-10 season and have won 316 games since 2011.
“This was a great game for us,” Schreacke said. “We need to keep working on putting together four complete quarters before we get to the postseason.”
QND may not have put together four complete quarters Friday night, but the Raiders were not far off.
Notre Dame led at the breaks 18-6, 34-17 and 55-28. The Raiders outrebounded Civic Memorial 41-26.
Sage Stratton dropped in 10 points for QND, Jenna Durst nine, Ari Buehler seven and Mara Ippensen six. Durst also had six rebounds.
Olivia Durbin meshed 11 points to lead Civic Memorial, hitting three of the Eagles’ 11 3-point field goals. Civic Memorial made just four 2-point field goals.
