Former QHS golfer Zach Burry finishes as runner-up at 101st Wisconsin State Open

KOHLER, Wis. — Zach Burry did more than just put together an amazing scorecard during his low round of the Wisconsin State Open.

He made sure to maintain some consistency in his game.

The former Quincy High School and Illinois State University golfer finished 72 holes of stroke play with a second-place finish, posting an even-par 72 Wednesday at Blackwolf Run-Meadow Valleys to cap an 8-under 279 total. He finished four shots back of champion Harrison Ott.

Burry opened with a 1-over 73 at Blackwolf Run, but teeing it up at Pine Hills Country Club in the second round, he found his rhythm with his irons and his putter.

Burry, a 2014 QHS graduate who finished eighth at the Class 3A state tournament as a senior, opened with a double-bogey 6, only to birdie four of his next five holes and then make an ace on the par-3 seventh hole. Another birdie on the par-3 ninth hole allowed him to make the turn at 5-under 30. He made four more birdies on the back nine and posted an 8-under 63.

His scorecard featured a score of 1 through 6 on at least one hole. He played the five par-3 holes in 5-under.
