Girls Tennis

At Cooper Tennis Complex, Springfield, Mo.

Class 1 state tournament: After suffering a second-round loss, the Palmyra doubles team of Katy Rindom and Maura Gottman won three straight matches to finish in fifth place. The Panthers rebounded from the straight-set loss to beat Cape Girardeau’s Megan Guellete and Amina Hussein 5-7, 6-4, 10-5. They followed that with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Willow Springs’ McKylie Cox and Madisyn Perkins.

In the fifth-place match against Bolivar’s McKinley Hedges and Brynley Waters, Rindom and Gottman won 6-3, 6-4. North County’s Lauren and Hanna Politte, who beat the Palmyra duo in the quarterfinals, won the doubles championship.

At Reservoir Park, Quincy

Class 1 QND Sectional: Quincy Notre Dame junior Lia Quintero is headed to the state tournament following a second-place finish in the singles bracket. Quintero didn’t lose a game in her first three matches, beating Jacksonville’s Sophie Homolka, Macomb’s Kylie Jacques and Chatham Glenwood’s Samantha Shankland 6-0, 6-0.

In the championship match, Quintero drew a rematch with Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin’s Agnes Cross. After losing the first set 6-0, Quintero rebounded for a 7-6 victory in the second set. However, Cross won the sectional title with a 6-3 victory in the third set. Cross beat Quintero 7-5, 6-2 in the sectional title match in 2020.

Quintero will open play in the state tournament Thursday in the Chicagoland area.

Prep Football

At Camp Point, Ill.

Central 44, Moweaqua Central A&M 14: A fourth-down stop on the opening possession of the second half led to a touchdown for the Panthers as they shut down the Raiders and won the battle of Class 1A state-ranked teams. Fourth-ranked Central outscored eighth-ranked Moweaqua 20-0 in the second half and finished the game with nearly 400 yards rushing.

Trailing 14-8 in the second quarter, the Panthers’ Garrett Williams ripped off a 78-yard run that led to his own 2-yard scoring plunge two plays later and a 16-14 lead with 10:44 to go in the first half. Sterling Stotts added a 55-yard scoring run to make it a 24-14 halftime lead as the Panthers racked up 289 yards rushing in the first half.

After stopping the Raiders on the first drive of the third quarter, Stotts scored on a 1-yard run to fuel the second-half outburst. The Panthers improved to 7-1 and will look to wrap up a first-round home playoff game next week with a victory at Calhoun.

At Carrollton, Ill.

Carrollton 55, Unity-Payson 27: The top-ranked Hawks outscored the Mustangs 34-7 in the second half in the Western Illinois Valley Conference crossover game. Unity is 5-3 overall and will close the regular season at home next Friday night against Winchester West Central.

At Petersburg, Ill.

Pittsfield 14, Petersburg PORTA 6: Senior wide receiver Mason Pherigo caught a 12-yard touchdown pass less than four minutes into the game and Jason McKee ripped off a 31-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter as the Saukees earned the Sangamo Conference victory. Pittsfield is 4-4 and can become playoff eligible by upsetting Williamsville next week.

Prep Softball

At Flower City Park, Palmyra, Mo.

Class 2 District 5 Tournament: Two runs scored on an error in the third inning, giving fourth-seeded Clark County the lead and propelling the Indians to a 7-3 victory over third-seeded Highland and the district championship. Clark County scored two runs in the top of first inning, only to see Highland answer with three runs in the bottom of the frame. The Cougars’ Olivia Ritterbusch doubled to drive in one run and scored on Ashley Kaylor’s single.

After the Indians tied the game with one out in the third inning, Highland pitcher Payton Miller made an error on a bunt with runners at the corners and both were able to score. Clark County tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth. Ritterbusch finished 2 for 3, while Miller struck out 11, walked none and allowed just three earned runs.

Girls Volleyball

At Sherrard, Ill.

Sherrard Tournament: Unity went 4-0 with four consecutive two-set sweeps. The Mustangs beat Erie/Prophetstown 25-11, 25-16, knocked off Morrison 25-11, 25-13, upended Kewanee Wethersfield 25-13, 25-19 and smacked Ridgewood 25-19, 25-9. Kyra Carothers was named to the all-tournament after compiling 45 kills, while Ashlynn Arnsman was also an all-tournament selection with 24 kills and 26 service points. Brooklyn Stiefel added 27 service points and Taylor Nichols had 90 assists.

Women’s Soccer

At Ellison Poulton Stadium, Canton, Mo.

Culver-Stockton College 6, Park 2: After surrendering two goals in the first 18 minutes, the Wildcats responded with three goals in a 3½-minute span and finished with six unanswered goals in the Heart of America Athletic Conference victory. Angela Lloret scored in the 23rd minute to cut C-SC’s deficit in half before Kirstin Jannin and Isabella Aranda scored 22 seconds apart in the 27th minute to take the lead. Lloret, Aranda and Coral Dillie each scored a second-half goal. The Wildcats improved to 10-3-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the Heart.

Men’s Soccer

At Ellison Poulton Stadium, Canton, Mo.

Culver-Stockton College 2, Park 1: Joaquin Cordoba scored off a Milan Cardoen assist three minutes into overtime to lift the Wildcats to a Heart of America Athletic Conference victory. It was Cordoba’s second goal as he gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute. The Pirates scored the equalizer in the 67th minute. C-SC is 4-9 overall and 2-6 in the Heart.

Women’s Volleyball

At Hammond Sportsplex & Community Center, Hammond, Ind.

Midwest Region Crossover: Quincy University wrapped up the weekend with a 25-20, 25-20, 25-20 victory over Saginaw Valley State. Emily Rehagen led the Hawks with 14 kills, Makayla Knoblauch finished with 28 assists and 13 digs and America Galvan had 11 digs. Quincy is 11-10 overall and returns to Great Lakes Valley Conference play next Friday at Southwest Baptist.

Prep Cross Country

At Peoria, Ill.

Patriot Invitational: The Quincy Notre Dame girls finished 13th in the 28-team field as senior Teresa Drotar finished 40th overall with a new personal record time of 20 minutes, 32.4 seconds. Sophomore Abigail Genenbacher finished sixth among all sophomores in the field with a 20:59.1. On the boys side, the Raiders were 18th out of 39 teams. Joe Warning was the second fastest freshman in the field, finishing in 17:32.9. Evan Hirstius set a new PR in 18:18.5.

Liberty’s Cannen Wolf finished fourth individually in 15:43.1.
