Blue Devils, Raiders unable to advance past sectionals
MORRIS, Ill. — Quincy High School boys golf coach Randy Mettemeyer understands there are days you tip your cap to the field and appreciate the darts others are throwing.
Monday was one of those days.
The Blue Devils had three players shoot in the 70s and posted a 311 total at the Class 3A Lockport Township Sectional at Nettle Creek Country Club, but four schools broke 300 and the top seven teams all shot 304 or better in one of the most highly contested sectionals in the state.
Lockport posted a 290 to win the sectional title and will advance to the Class 3A state tournament at the Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington along with Lincoln-Way East and Moline, both of which shot a 298. Quincy finished eighth.
Blue Devils sophomore Gabriel Gold shot a 3-over 75 and won a playoff for one of the 10 individual spots in the state field. Brady Walker shot a 77 for Quincy, while Luke Chevalier posted a 78 and Luke Mettemeyer carded an 81.
Meanwhile, at the Class 2A Metamora Sectional at Metamora Fields Golf Course, Quincy Notre Dame finished 11th out of 12 teams with a 341. Macomb won the sectional crown with a 305, followed by Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin (315) and Normal U-High (318).
Ross Thompson led the Raiders with an 81.
