QUINCY — The Quincy Notre Dame volleyball team refused to be denied, while the Quincy High School squad got over the hump.

That made the day-long QHS Early Bird Invitational Tournament a success on all fronts.

The Raiders swept five consecutive matches and overcame a five-point deficit in the second set of the title match to dispatch Pekin 25-15, 25-18. QND senior middle hitter Abbey Schreacke was named the tournament MVP, while junior outside hitter Emma Hoing was an all-tournament selection.

Hoing had six kills and two aces in the title match, while Schreacke had four kills and Annie Eaton dished out 17 assists.

After opening the day with a three-set loss to East St. Louis — its second consecutive three-set loss to open the season — QHS battled back to beat Kirksville 25-9, 25-15. That propelled the Blue Devils to a 3-2 record in the tournament and a fifth-place finish.
